Take a peek at what an IBD nutritionist carries with her wherever she goes.

When I’m heading out the door, I want to travel as lightly as possible, even though I live with Crohn’s disease, a form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). A handful of essentials in a small tote bag is all I need.

Electrolytes + water

I’m that person who always has a water bottle with them. I can easily forget to hydrate when I’m not home in my normal element, but having a full water bottle with my favorite LMNT electrolytes keeps the water flowing.

The electrolytes add a tasty flavor and more importantly, minerals that the body needs to use the water effectively to maintain hydration.

Earbuds

Whether I’m going for a long walk to get some exercise or traveling amid the crowds on the subway, I like to have something playing in my ear. Sometimes it’s music, elevating my mood and making me feel good.

Other times I’m listening to podcasts or guided meditations. Either way, I like to make use of that walking time to learn, relax, or laugh and simply pass the time.

Activated charcoal capsules

A staple supplement of mine for years has been activated charcoal. This nifty supplement has saved me countless times after eating something that caused gastrointestinal discomfort.

I keep it in my bag (and always travel with it) in case I accidentally find myself in a tricky IBD situation. I just make sure not to take my other supplements at the same time, because the activated charcoal might make them ineffective.

Lip balm

Having rough or chapped lips is uncomfortable, so I try to avoid it at all costs. A quick swipe of lip balm, and I’m good to go.

I like a simple, not overly scented lip balm that makes my lips feel hydrated and smooth. Lip balm also ties my “look” together on most days when I don’t wear a gloss or lipstick.

Planner + pen

Even with all the tech in the world, I still love my paper planner. Everything I need to do is written in there.

Thank goodness, because I’d definitely forget many tasks otherwise. I like being able to check my schedule at any time, pencil in a task right away so I don’t forget, or write a quick list.

Protein bar

Having a few go-to snacks that are healthy, IBD-friendly, and travel well is a lifesaver when I’m away from the house for long periods of time.

GoMacro bars have been a favorite of mine for a while. They fix my hunger pangs so I don’t reach for something unhealthy. They’re tasty, gluten-free, and keep me satiated until I can make a balanced meal.
